Established in May 2006 by the University of Cologne, the Graduate School for Biological Sciences (GSfBS) offers a broad program, giving students the opportunity to train in all biological fields ranging from ecology and plant biology to genetics, molecular medicine and evolution. GSfBS developed after building on the experience and infrastructure from existing, small-scale graduate programmes, where methods and structure for improved graduate training have been extensively tested. These programs are partially unified and a core programme is available for graduate students in all areas of biology.

The School also supports a selective, international Fast Track Masters/Doctoral Program in English, which has been active since winter semester 2006/07. It fosters connections between research groups in medical and basic science research institutes of the University of Cologne and the Max Planck Institutes for Plant Breeding Research and the Biology of Ageing and exploits them in favor of the graduate students.
